A Quick Guide to Enjoying Ridgefield

Ridgefield was designated Connecticut’s first “Cultural District” in 2021, and the 316-year-old town’s history, museums, performance spaces, and art galleries reinforce the wisdom of this honor. The downtown area is highly walkable, and homeandmoney.com called Ridgefield "one of the 'Safest Towns in America' and the '#1 Town in Connecticut'." Strollers enjoy historic homes, green areas with well-tended native plantings, and a wide variety of shopping and arts opportunities. Highlights include, but are not limited to:

ACT (A Contemporary Theater) of Connecticut, which hosts touring companies of major Broadway plays and musicals as well as theater-focused workshops, lectures, and all-ages classes.

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, which showcases both emerging and established artists through its indoor gallery spaces and outdoor sculpture garden. The museum also hosts all-ages education programs, performances, lectures, and other community events.

Ballard Park, a green space right on Main Street where five acres of gardens, gazebos, playgrounds, monuments, party spaces, and shade trees provide places to enjoy picnics, quiet time, and a regular schedule of summer music concerts and other festivities and events.

Bark Park Dog Park, a fully fenced in canine play area that features separate sections for small dogs and all dogs, shaded sitting areas for humans, built-in dog toys, and water.

The Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center, a museum housed in a 300+ year-old former farmhouse, home, hotel, post office, stagecoach stop, and tavern. Period pieces within the museum reflect life from the early 18th century through the early 20th century. The estate also features a carriage barn, garden house, cottage, visitor center, and walled garden.

Lounsbury House, an 1896 mansion built by former Connecticut Governor Phineas C. Lounsbury. The home and gardens are available for weddings, art gatherings, and other private events.

Ridgefield Theater Barn, a community theater performance and education space that presents four shows per year. The space also offers workshops and other theater-focused education, including adult improv classes and kids’ and teens’ programming.

Ridgefield Community Center, a forum for nonprofit organizations and events, including programming and recreation for senior citizens, civic organization meetings, and school, political, and ecumenical organization meetings.

Ridgefield Golf Course, a municipal green that offers Ridgefield residents discounted membership access to its 18-hole course, instruction, and golf-focused event hosting.

Ridgefield Guild of Artists, which provides talks, walks, classes, gallery spaces, workshops, and multi-arts summer programs, special events, with a strong focus on local and regional artists.

Ridgefield Playhouse, a performing arts space that boasts a 500-seat theater, music, comedy, lecture, and other entertainment performance space.

RPAC Art Center and Academy, a relatively new space for arts-focused continuing education programs, work spaces, studio spaces, and gallery spaces to artists. RPAC also offers workshops and other general education programming.

Sturges Park, a state park with hiking trails, fields, outdoor camping, and a cabin available to scouts and civic groups that features bunk beds and a wood stove.

Tiger Hollow Stadium, a 5,000-seat venue within the Ridgefield High School campus. Community events at the stadium include charity-focused athletic activities, competition, fireworks, adult athletic competitions, and youth league programs.

The Winter Garden Ice Arena, a three-season forum for team and individual skating, hockey, lessons, parties, disco skating, and general frozen water fun.

Ridgefield’s very walkable downtown offers a spectrum of unique shopping opportunities, both within the Ridgefield Shopping Center and Addessi Center Shopping Center areas and beyond. For essentials, the Copps Plaza shopping area should meet most needs.

Dining opportunities abound within Ridgefield. French, Italian, and American selections are well represented, as well as Chinese, Mexican, and seafood options.

Throughout the year, Ridgefield hosts a wide spectrum of community events, including the all-ages summer solstice Make Music Day, tours of private gardens, ecology tours, parades, public art events, public art sales, SummerFest (a Chamber of Commerce-backed celebration of local Main Street vendors that features live entertainment, contests, and more), a winter Holiday Stroll down Main Street, A Taste of Ridgefield local restaurant showcase, the Nod Hill Brewery Oyster Fest, and the Keeler Tavern Museum’s Cannonball Gala fundraising event.
